About these prices. Everything here was read from Microsoft’s Australian pricing pages and its Learn documentation on 1 October 2026. Microsoft is part-way through renaming and repackaging Copilot, so treat this page as a map and confirm the number on the checkout screen before you buy.

Two different GST conventions. Microsoft’s home subscription prices are consumer prices, which Microsoft has described as tax inclusive. Its business prices are listed excluding GST — add 10%. Business prices below are per user, per month, on an annual commitment unless we say otherwise.

These are Microsoft’s own list prices, for buying direct. Licences supplied through a partner as part of a managed service — ours included — are quoted separately and can differ.

At a glance

Copilot is two product lines that share a name. Which one you get depends on the account you sign in with: a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail) or a work account issued by your organisation.

First, the names

Half the confusion about Copilot is vocabulary, and the vocabulary is changing as we write.

  • “Microsoft 365 Copilot” is being renamed “Microsoft Copilot”, and “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat” is becoming “Microsoft Copilot Chat”. Microsoft’s technical documentation already uses the new names; its Australian pricing pages still use the old ones. We use the pricing-page names here, because that is what you will see at the checkout.
  • There is now one Copilot app. The separate home and work apps were merged during August and September 2026. You sign in with a personal or a work account, and the two stay separate.
  • Copilot Pro no longer exists. The old US$20 personal add-on is off sale, and support ended on 1 August 2026. Microsoft 365 Premium replaced it.
  • GitHub Copilot is a different product — a programming assistant, licensed separately. It is listed below only so you know it isn’t part of any plan here.

For what each feature actually does, see every Copilot feature, explained.

Home plans

For a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft doesn’t publish numeric usage limits for these — it describes them as standard, more, extensive and highest.

One thing to know before the cards: on a personal account, Microsoft uses your Copilot conversations to train its AI models unless you opt out in the privacy settings. Conversations are kept for 18 months by default.

Home

Copilot (free)

AU$0

Web, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

For everyday questions.

  • Chat with answers grounded in the web
  • Voice conversations
  • Image creation
  • File upload
  • Copilot in the Edge browser

Watch for: everything is “subject to available capacity”, with no published limits. No Copilot inside Word or Excel.

Home

Microsoft 365 Personal

AU$16 a month

Or AU$159 a year · 1 person

For one person who wants Office with Copilot built in.

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, with Copilot in each
  • Higher limits on chat, voice, vision and images than the free tier
  • 1 TB of OneDrive storage
  • Microsoft Defender

Watch for: AI use is rationed by credits and feature limits. The Researcher and Analyst agents are not included.

Home

Microsoft 365 Family

AU$18 a month

Or AU$179 a year · up to 6 people

For a household sharing Office.

  • Everything in Personal, for up to six people
  • Up to 6 TB of storage (1 TB each)

Watch for: the Copilot features belong to the person who owns the subscription. The other five get the apps and storage, not the AI.

Home

Microsoft 365 Premium

AU$33 a month

Or AU$329 a year · up to 6 people · replaces Copilot Pro

For one person who uses Copilot heavily at home or as a sole trader.

  • Everything in Family
  • “Extensive” usage of Copilot across the apps
  • The Researcher and Analyst agents
  • Copilot Cowork, in preview

Watch for: AI is still for the owner only. It is a personal product — no admin, no work-data protections.

Home

Microsoft 365 Pro

AU$165 a month

Monthly billing only

For the heaviest individual users.

  • Everything in Premium
  • The highest usage limits for chat, voice and vision

Watch for: new in 2026, with no annual option. At five times the price of Premium it only makes sense if you are hitting Premium’s limits.

Home

Personal Classic and Family Classic

AU$11 and AU$14 a month

Prices as stated by Microsoft in November 2025 · no Copilot

For existing subscribers who want Office without Copilot.

  • The core apps and security updates
  • No Copilot, and no price rise to pay for it

Watch for: these aren’t on Microsoft’s Australian plans page. Historically they were only offered part-way through cancelling — which is what the ACCC took Microsoft to court over. See below.

Work plans

For accounts your organisation issues. On all of these, Microsoft states that prompts, responses and the work data Copilot reads are not used to train its foundation models. Prices exclude GST.

Work

Copilot Chat

Included

With Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium, E3, E5 and E7, the frontline F plans, Office 365 E plans and education A plans

For everyone in the organisation, from day one.

  • Chat grounded in the web, on current OpenAI models
  • File upload and image generation
  • Enterprise data protection: covered by your Microsoft agreement, not used for training
  • Copilot Chat inside Outlook
  • Copilot Pages

Watch for: it cannot see your email, files, meetings or Teams chats. Access is “standard”, meaning it slows when Microsoft is busy. Agents that use work data are billed per use and need an Azure subscription.

Work

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business

AU$31.40 per user a month

Paid yearly · AU$26.91 for the first year on Microsoft’s offer running 1 July to 31 December 2026 · AU$37.68 on a monthly subscription

For organisations of up to 300 people on a Business plan.

  • Chat grounded in your own email, files, meetings and chats
  • Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Teams
  • The Researcher, Analyst and Facilitator agents
  • Sales, Service and Finance agents
  • Notebooks, Search and Create
  • Agent Builder and Copilot Studio for internal agents
  • Adoption analytics, SharePoint Advanced Management, a choice of AI models

Watch for: an add-on, so you also need Business Basic, Standard or Premium, Apps for business or Teams Essentials. Launched 1 December 2025. Copilot Cowork is metered on top.

Work

Business Standard or Premium, with Copilot

AU$35.20 or AU$47.90 per user a month

Paid yearly · AU$42.24 and AU$57.48 on a monthly subscription · up to 300 users

For buying the Microsoft 365 plan and Copilot as one licence.

  • Everything in Business Standard (AU$21.00 alone) or Business Premium (AU$32.90 alone)
  • Everything in Copilot Business

Watch for: at list price the bundles are much cheaper than buying the two parts separately — AU$35.20 against AU$52.40 for Standard, AU$47.90 against AU$64.30 for Premium. Microsoft’s page doesn’t say whether that is an introductory price, so check it at renewal.

Work

Microsoft 365 Copilot

AU$44.90 per user a month

Paid yearly · no trial · any number of users

For organisations over 300 people, or on enterprise plans.

  • The same feature list as Copilot Business on Microsoft’s Australian comparison table
  • Attaches to enterprise plans (E3, E5, Office 365) as well as Business plans
  • No user ceiling

Watch for: if you have 300 users or fewer you are paying AU$13.50 a month more per person than Copilot Business for the same features. Copilot in Teams needs a Teams licence.

Enterprise

Microsoft 365 E7

AU$148.20 per user a month

Annual · AU$135.40 without Teams · available since 1 May 2026 · through Microsoft sales or a partner

For enterprises that want E5, Copilot and agent governance together.

  • Everything in Microsoft 365 E5 (AU$89.80 alone)
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • Agent 365, for governing AI agents
  • The Entra Suite and advanced Defender, Intune and Purview

Watch for: E5, Copilot and Agent 365 bought separately come to AU$157.10, so E7 saves about AU$9 a user — only worth it if you would buy all three anyway. For reference, E3 is AU$58.40.

Extras, and what is billed on top

This is the part that catches people. A Copilot licence is no longer the whole bill: Microsoft is moving its “agentic” features — where Copilot does a long piece of work for you — to pay-per-use billing in Copilot Credits.

ItemPriceWhat it is
Copilot CoworkMetered in Copilot Credits, on top of a Copilot licenceAn agent that plans and carries out long, multi-step work across your Microsoft 365 apps. Off by default; an administrator switches it on and sets spending limits. Explained here.
Copilot CreditsUS$0.01 a credit pay-as-you-go, or AU$299.30 a month for a pack of 25,000The currency for metered features: Cowork, Copilot Studio agents, and agents that use work data for people without a Copilot licence. Needs an Azure subscription.
Copilot StudioPaid in Copilot CreditsThe full builder for custom agents, including ones that face customers or run on their own. Building internal agents is covered by a Copilot licence.
Agent 365AU$22.40 per user a month; included in E7An admin control plane for observing, governing and securing AI agents.
Security CopilotAn allowance is included with E5 and E7; otherwise US$4 per compute unit per hourAn assistant for security teams, billed through Azure. Not part of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
GitHub CopilotUS$0 to US$100 a month for individuals; US$19 (Business) or US$39 (Enterprise) per userA programming assistant. A separate product with separate licences, priced in US dollars.

On 25 September 2026 Microsoft announced further usage-billed features — Code and Autopilot — and said the newest “frontier” AI models would also be billed by use. The direction is clear: a flat subscription for chat, a meter for work done on your behalf. Set a spending limit before you switch any of it on.

The differences that matter

For a business, the real fork is between the Copilot Chat you already have and the paid licence. The two paid licences differ in price and eligibility, not features.

Australia: tax, data and compliance

The parts of the fine print that are different, or matter more, when you are buying from here.

Prices, GST and billing

  • Business prices exclude GST. Microsoft’s Australian business pages say so on every price. AU$44.90 is AU$49.39 once GST is added; AU$31.40 is AU$34.54.
  • Monthly costs 20% more. The prices here are for an annual commitment. A month-to-month subscription is 20% higher — for example AU$37.68 rather than AU$31.40 for Copilot Business.
  • Microsoft 365 itself went up on 1 July 2026. Business Basic and Standard and the E3 and E5 plans rose; Business Premium, the home plans and Copilot itself did not. The base-plan prices on this page are the current, post-rise ones.
  • Copilot Credits are priced in US dollars on a pay-as-you-go basis, so metered features move with the exchange rate.

The ACCC case

On 27 October 2025 the ACCC began Federal Court proceedings against Microsoft, alleging it misled about 2.7 million Australian Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers. When Copilot was added in late 2024, the annual price rose from $109 to $159 for Personal and from $139 to $179 for Family. The ACCC alleges subscribers were told to accept the higher price or cancel, without being told about the cheaper “Classic” plans that had no Copilot.

On 6 November 2025 Microsoft apologised and offered refunds of the difference to subscribers who switched to a Classic plan by 31 December 2025. We found no judgment, penalty or settlement published as at 1 October 2026.

Where your data is stored and processed

  • Stored in Australia. For Australian organisations, Copilot conversations are covered by the same data residency commitments as the rest of Microsoft 365, so they are stored at rest in Australia.
  • Processed — possibly elsewhere. The AI processing itself can happen in other regions. Microsoft promised in-country processing for Australia by the end of 2025, then revised that in April 2026 to “by the end of 2026”. As at this writing it has not arrived.
  • Other companies’ models are an exception. Copilot now uses Anthropic’s Claude models, and models operated by OpenAI directly, alongside the ones Microsoft runs itself. Both are switched on by default for Australian organisations, and both are excluded from in-country processing commitments.
  • You can switch them off. In the Microsoft 365 admin centre: Copilot › Settings › AI providers operating as Microsoft subprocessors. It can be set per group. Switching a provider off also removes the features that rely on its models.

If your contracts or your regulator require that data is processed in Australia, that admin setting is the first thing to look at — before anyone is given a licence.

Training

  • Work accounts: prompts, responses and the data Copilot reads through Microsoft Graph are not used to train foundation models.
  • Personal accounts: Microsoft does train on Copilot conversations unless you opt out. Its list of excluded countries does not include Australia. Copilot used inside the Microsoft 365 apps on a Personal or Family plan is excluded, as are under-18s.

Government and IRAP

  • Microsoft’s guidance for Australian government states that Microsoft 365, with Copilot included, has been IRAP-assessed to store information up to PROTECTED, and that Copilot Chat is covered by the same assessment. Its most recent assessments were announced in March 2026.
  • An IRAP assessment is not a certification — each agency still makes its own authorisation decision. We could not confirm whether the Anthropic and OpenAI-operated model paths are inside the assessed scope; given they sit outside the in-country commitments, an agency should ask.

Education and nonprofit pricing

Both exist. Neither publishes a full Australian-dollar price for Copilot.

SectorWhat is publishedHow it is bought
EducationCopilot Chat is included with the A1, A3 and A5 plans. The academic Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on is listed at US$18 per user a month for staff and students aged 13 and over, with a note that regional prices vary. No AU$ figure is published.Through an education licensing agreement or a partner.
NonprofitMicrosoft 365 E3 at AU$14.60 and E5 at AU$35.90 for eligible nonprofits. Microsoft 365 Copilot is discounted 15%, to US$25.50; no AU$ figure, and no nonprofit price for Copilot Business, was found.Eligibility is assessed by Microsoft; licences come direct or through a partner.

What changed in the past year

If your mental picture of Copilot is a year old, these are the bits that have moved.

WhenWhat happened
October – November 2025The ACCC took Microsoft to court over the 2024 home-plan price rise. Microsoft apologised and offered refunds.
December 2025Microsoft 365 Copilot Business launched for organisations of up to 300 users, well below the enterprise price.
January 2026Anthropic became a Microsoft subprocessor, bringing Claude models into Copilot.
May 2026Microsoft 365 E7 and Agent 365 became available.
June 2026Copilot Cowork became generally available, billed by use. OpenAI became a direct subprocessor.
July 2026Microsoft 365 base-plan prices rose. The Copilot Business promotional price began.
August – September 2026Copilot Pro reached end of support. The home and work apps merged into one Microsoft Copilot app, and the rename from “Microsoft 365 Copilot” to “Microsoft Copilot” began.
25 September 2026Microsoft announced Home, Code and Autopilot, and a pricing split: a subscription for chat, usage billing for agentic work.

Which plan, then?

Our view, for Australian small and mid-sized businesses. It is an opinion, not a specification.

  • Start with what you already own. If your team is on Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard or Premium, everyone already has Copilot Chat. It is protected, it isn’t used for training, and it costs nothing extra. Get people using that — with a work account, not a personal one — before buying anything.
  • Then license the people who will use it, not the whole company. The paid licence earns its keep for people who live in email, meetings and documents. Buy Copilot Business for those seats and review after a quarter.
  • 300 users or fewer? Don’t pay the enterprise price. Copilot Business has the same feature list as Microsoft 365 Copilot for AU$13.50 less per person a month, and the promotional price runs to 31 December 2026.
  • Renewing Microsoft 365 anyway? Price the “with Copilot” bundles. At today’s list prices they undercut buying the plan and the add-on separately by a wide margin.
  • Tidy your permissions first. Copilot can surface anything a person technically has access to. An overshared SharePoint site that nobody ever found becomes one that Copilot quotes from. Fix the sharing before the rollout, not after.
  • Treat Cowork as a separate decision. It is metered, off by default, and depends on Claude models processed outside Australian commitments. Decide deliberately, and set a spending limit.
  • At home: the free Copilot is enough for most people. Microsoft 365 Personal makes sense if you want the Office apps anyway; if you don’t want Copilot at all, ask for the Classic plan.

Compare with Claude’s plans and ChatGPT’s plans before deciding. Copilot’s advantage is that it lives inside the Microsoft apps your team already uses; the others are stronger as general-purpose assistants. Many businesses end up with one of each.

Common questions

How much does Microsoft 365 Copilot cost in Australia?
As checked on 1 October 2026, excluding GST, per user per month on an annual commitment: Microsoft 365 Copilot is AU$44.90, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (up to 300 users) is AU$31.40, with a promotional AU$26.91 until 31 December 2026. Both are add-ons to a Microsoft 365 plan. Bundles are AU$35.20 (Business Standard with Copilot) and AU$47.90 (Business Premium with Copilot).
Is Copilot free with Microsoft 365?
Partly. Work accounts on most Microsoft 365 plans include Copilot Chat at no extra cost — a protected chat grounded in the web, with no access to your work data. The version that reads your email, files and meetings and works inside the apps is a paid add-on. Personal Microsoft 365 subscriptions include Copilot in the apps, with usage limits.
What’s the difference between Copilot Business and Microsoft 365 Copilot?
On Microsoft’s Australian comparison table, the features are the same. Copilot Business is limited to organisations of up to 300 users on Business plans and costs AU$31.40; Microsoft 365 Copilot has no user limit, attaches to enterprise plans too, and costs AU$44.90.
Is Copilot Pro still available?
No. Copilot Pro is off sale and Microsoft ended support for it on 1 August 2026. Microsoft 365 Premium, at AU$33 a month, has taken its place.
Is Copilot data processed in Australia?
It is stored in Australia for Australian organisations, but the AI processing may happen overseas. Microsoft says in-country processing for Australia is expected by the end of 2026. The Anthropic and OpenAI-operated models inside Copilot are excluded from in-country commitments, and are on by default — an administrator can switch them off.
Does Copilot train on my data?
For work accounts, no. For personal accounts, Microsoft does use Copilot conversations for training unless you opt out in the privacy settings, and Australia isn’t on its list of excluded countries.
