About this page. Compiled from Microsoft’s Learn documentation, support pages, release notes and blogs on 1 October 2026. Microsoft restructured Copilot heavily in August and September 2026, so several features you may know have new names, and a few have gone. Where Microsoft’s own pages contradict each other, we say so rather than pick one.

Reading the status column. Available means generally available. Preview means usable but unfinished. Frontier is Microsoft’s early-access programme, which an administrator has to opt in to and which usually starts in the United States. Not in Australia and Retired mean what they say.

First, the names

Copilot is two things that share a name: a personal assistant for your Microsoft account at home, and a work assistant tied to your organisation’s Microsoft 365. Since September 2026 they live in one app, but they have different features, different privacy rules and different price lists.

Microsoft has also renamed a great deal in the past year. If you are looking for something by its old name, this is the translation table.

Copilot Cowork

The feature most people are asking about. Ordinary Copilot answers a question or drafts a thing while you watch. Cowork takes a whole job: you describe the outcome you want, it works out the steps, and then it carries them out across your Microsoft 365 apps, in the background, checking in with you when it matters.

What it does

Hands-off, multi-step work

  • Plans and runs long tasks across Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and SharePoint
  • Asks for your approval before sensitive actions, such as sending an email
  • Runs tasks on a schedule, or when something happens
  • Learns custom “skills” and uses plugins
  • Generates images, and carries out web tasks in your own Edge browser

Example: “Go through this week’s supplier emails, update the price list spreadsheet, and draft a summary for Monday’s meeting.”

What it can’t do

The guard rails

  • It can’t touch files on your computer’s own drive — only what is in Microsoft 365
  • It can’t delete files
  • It can’t read encrypted files
  • In education, it is available to staff, not students

Worth knowing: Cowork acts with your permissions. Anything you can open, it can open. Tidy up oversharing before you switch it on.

What it costs

A licence, plus a meter

  • Work accounts: needs a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and usage is billed on top in Copilot Credits (US$0.01 a credit pay-as-you-go, with discounts for buying ahead)
  • Off by default — an administrator switches it on and sets spending limits
  • Personal accounts: in preview, for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers

Status: generally available for work accounts since 16 June 2026, after a preview from March. See the plans page for credit pricing.

Under the bonnet

Built with Anthropic’s Claude

  • Microsoft built Cowork with Anthropic’s technology, and it uses Claude models for most of its reasoning, drafting and tool use
  • A model picker offers both OpenAI and Claude models; by default it chooses for you
  • In Australia: we found no exclusion. Cowork’s prompts and responses are covered by Microsoft’s commitment to store data at rest in Australia

Watch for: the Claude processing itself is excluded from Microsoft’s in-country processing commitments. If “processed in Australia” is a requirement for you, Cowork doesn’t meet it.

What’s different in Australia

Most of Copilot is the same here as anywhere. These are the exceptions.

  • Claude models are on by default. For organisations outside the EU and UK — so including Australia — Anthropic’s models are switched on unless an administrator turns them off, under Copilot › Settings › AI providers operating as Microsoft subprocessors. The same now applies to models operated directly by OpenAI.
  • Those models sit outside the in-country promise. Microsoft states that Anthropic models are excluded from in-country processing commitments. Features that depend on them — Cowork, the Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents, Researcher’s review step — inherit that.
  • In-country processing hasn’t arrived yet. Copilot data for Australian organisations is stored in Australia, but processing in Australia is promised “by the end of 2026”.
  • Not available here: Browse with Copilot (United States only) and, by report, Copilot Health.
  • Frontier features start in the United States. Microsoft says early-access features begin in English for US-based users. Expect anything marked Frontier to reach Australian tenants later, and check before promising it to staff.
  • Personal accounts are used for training. Microsoft trains on personal Copilot conversations unless you opt out, and Australia isn’t on its list of excluded countries. Work accounts are not used for training.

Prices, GST, the ACCC case and the IRAP position are on the Copilot plans page.

Knowing the features is one thing. Getting a team to use them is another.

Common questions

What is Copilot Cowork?
Microsoft’s agent for long, multi-step work. You describe an outcome; it plans the steps and carries them out across Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and SharePoint, asking for approval before sensitive actions such as sending email. It was built with Anthropic’s technology and has been generally available for work accounts since 16 June 2026. Full explanation above.
Is Cowork included in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Not entirely. It needs a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and then its usage is billed on top in Copilot Credits. It is off by default; an administrator enables it and can set spending limits.
What can I do at work without paying for a licence?
With an eligible Microsoft 365 work account you get Copilot Chat: protected, web-grounded chat, file upload, image generation, Copilot Pages, Copilot Chat in Outlook and agents that use web data. You don’t get answers from your own email, files and meetings, Copilot editing inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Copilot in Teams, or Researcher and Analyst. See the table.
What is Work IQ?
The layer that grounds Copilot’s answers in your organisation’s own data — the email, files, meetings and chats you have permission to see. A Work IQ button in the chat box replaced the older Work / Web toggle during 2026. It needs a paid licence.
Does Copilot use Claude?
Yes. Anthropic has been a Microsoft subprocessor since January 2026, and Claude models are used in Copilot chat, Researcher, Cowork, Copilot Studio and the Office apps, alongside OpenAI models. For Australian organisations they are on by default, can be switched off by an administrator, and are excluded from Microsoft’s in-country processing commitments.
What happened to the COPILOT function in Excel?
Microsoft discontinued it on 14 September 2026; it had only ever been a preview. Edit with Copilot (formerly Agent Mode) is now the way to have Copilot work directly in a workbook.
