AI plan guides

On this page

About these prices. Everything here was read from OpenAI’s own Australian pricing and help pages on 1 October 2026, from an Australian internet connection. OpenAI changes plans often — six pricing changes this year alone — so treat this page as a map and confirm the number on the checkout screen before you buy.

Prices marked A$ are Australian dollars as OpenAI lists them. OpenAI’s pages don’t say whether those prices include GST, and we couldn’t confirm it either way — see the Australian notes.

At a glance

Six plans in two families. The personal plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) belong to one person and may use your conversations for training unless you switch that off. The organisation plans (Business, Enterprise) give you a shared workspace, an administrator, and no training on your data by default.

Personal plans

One login, one person. None of these has an administrator, single sign-on or shared billing, and on all four your conversations may be used to improve OpenAI’s models unless you turn that off under Settings › Data controls › Improve the model for everyone.

Personal

Free

A$0

No card needed

For trying ChatGPT, and for occasional questions.

  • Everyday text chat on the lightest current model (GPT-5.6 Luna)
  • Web search, projects, study mode and voice
  • A limited taste of file uploads, image creation, deep research, memory, data analysis and Codex
  • ChatGPT Work (the agent that carries out tasks) on the desktop app only, limited
  • 500 MB of storage

Watch for: ads below answers (since April 2026 in Australia), a short memory for long conversations (about 12 pages), and none of the stronger models. An “ads-free” mode exists, but it lowers your limits and removes image creation and deep research.

Personal

Go

A$13 a month

Monthly only · US list price US$8

For people who hit the Free limits but don’t need the stronger models.

  • Everything in Free, with higher limits on messages, uploads, images and voice
  • Longer memory and scheduled tasks
  • Handles much longer conversations and documents than Free
  • 4 GB of storage

Watch for: it is still the lightest model, and Go may still show ads. Deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work are all limited.

Personal

Plus

A$30 a month

Monthly only, no annual option · US list price US$20 · A$29.99 through the Apple App Store

For one person who uses ChatGPT most working days.

  • The stronger chat model (GPT-5.6 Sol) with adjustable thinking effort
  • The GPT-6 family inside ChatGPT Work and Codex
  • ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and phone; Codex for programming
  • Deep research, better image creation, expanded memory
  • Apps that connect to your other tools, scheduled tasks, Sites, record mode
  • No ads · 20 GB of storage

Watch for: usage is metered in rolling five-hour and weekly windows. OpenAI doesn’t publish exact message caps. No admin or team features, and training is still on by default.

Personal

Pro (three tiers)

From A$155 a month

Monthly only · US$100, US$200 and US$500 tiers · Apple App Store: A$154.99, A$300.00, A$769.99

For people who run ChatGPT, Work or Codex hard, all day.

  • Everything in Plus, with far more usage and no five-hour Codex limit
  • The “Pro” reasoning models and the highest thinking setting in chat
  • Dots — always-on agents (rolling out)
  • The largest working memory for long documents, 100 GB of storage
  • The three tiers differ mainly in how much you can use; the US$500 tier adds the fastest response speed

Watch for: it is still a personal plan — no admin, no single sign-on, training on by default. The website only shows “From A$155” until you sign in; the two higher prices above are the App Store’s.

Business and Enterprise

A shared workspace that the organisation owns. Staff sign in with their work identity, an administrator controls who has access, and conversations are not used for training by default. If you used to know this plan as “ChatGPT Team”, it was renamed Business in August 2025.

Organisation

Business — Standard seat

A$28 per seat a month, billed annually

A$35 month to month · US$20 / US$25 · minimum 2 seats, maximum 200 · card payment only

For small and mid-sized teams buying online.

  • ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on desktop, web and phone
  • Apps for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and more; company knowledge search; shared projects
  • Admin console, admin roles, domain verification, usage analytics and spend controls
  • SAML single sign-on and multi-factor authentication
  • No training on your data by default
  • An included usage allowance, with optional pooled credits when you run over

Watch for: no SCIM user provisioning, no audit/Compliance API, no custom retention rules and no invoicing. Only 15 “Pro model” messages a month per seat.

Organisation

Business — Premium seat

A$140 per seat a month, billed annually

A$175 month to month · US$100 / US$125 · mix freely with Standard seats

For the few people in a team who would otherwise need Pro.

  • Everything in a Standard seat
  • Five times the usage of a Standard seat
  • No five-hour limit on Codex
  • Dots (always-on agents)
  • 50 “Pro model” messages a week

Watch for: introduced in August 2026. Buy it per person, not for the whole team — most staff won’t reach the Standard limits.

Organisation

Enterprise

By quote

Annual contract through OpenAI sales · invoiced · price and minimum seat count are not published

For large or heavily regulated organisations.

  • Everything in Business, with larger working memory and the fastest responses
  • SCIM provisioning, role-based access and group permissions
  • Audit logging through the Compliance API, IP allow-listing
  • Custom data-retention periods
  • Data stored at rest in Australia, if chosen when the workspace is created
  • Customer-managed encryption keys
  • 24/7 priority support, service levels, negotiated legal terms

Watch for: the residency region is fixed when the workspace is set up, and it covers storage, not processing. Details below.

The differences that matter

Most of the price ladder buys you more usage of the same product. The lines that change what the product is are the ones about training, administration and where data lives.

“K” means thousands of tokens — roughly, 1K is 750 English words. A bigger number means ChatGPT can keep more of a long document or conversation in mind at once.

Australia: tax, data and compliance

The parts of the fine print that are different, or matter more, when you are buying from here.

Currency and GST

  • Web subscriptions are billed in Australian dollars. Subscriptions bought inside the iPhone or Android app are billed by Apple or Google instead, at slightly different prices. API usage is billed in US dollars.
  • GST is the open question. OpenAI’s pricing pages don’t state whether the A$ prices include GST; its terms say only that it will charge tax where required. We could not confirm it either way without completing a purchase. If you claim GST credits, check the checkout total and make sure the receipt is a valid tax invoice.
  • Business is card-only. If your accounts team needs a purchase order and an invoice, that is an Enterprise feature.

Where your data is stored

  • Personal plans: no choice. Data is stored and processed overseas.
  • Enterprise, Edu and the API: since November 2025, Australia is one of ten regions where data can be stored at rest — conversations, uploaded files, memory and generated images, including backups. On Enterprise it costs nothing extra, but must be chosen when a new workspace is created.
  • Storage is not processing. For Australia, the residency promise covers where data sits, not where the model runs. Your prompt still travels overseas to be answered. In-region processing is offered only for the United States, Europe and the UAE.
  • Business: OpenAI’s own pages disagree. A help article says regional storage for Business is “rolling out gradually” and is chosen at checkout; the pricing table says Business has no data residency. Even where it is offered, a copy of prompts and responses is kept in the US for a limited time for abuse monitoring. Don’t assume — look for the region selector when you sign up.
  • Not covered even on Enterprise: Codex on the web, ChatGPT Sites, and anything still labelled beta.

If you handle personal information, storing or processing it overseas has consequences under the Privacy Act’s cross-border rules (APP 8). That is a question for your privacy adviser, not for a pricing page — but it is the reason the residency lines above matter.

Training and retention

  • Training: on by default for Free, Go, Plus and Pro; off by default for Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API. Temporary chats are never used for training. Clicking thumbs-up or thumbs-down can share that conversation even if you have opted out.
  • Deletion: deleted chats are removed from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, with exceptions for legal and security reasons. Enterprise administrators set their own retention period.
  • The New York Times court order: for part of 2025 a US court required OpenAI to keep consumer conversations indefinitely. OpenAI says that obligation ended on 26 September 2025 and normal 30-day deletion has resumed, though data from April to September 2025 remains under legal hold. Enterprise and Edu were never covered by the order.
  • Zero data retention is available only to approved API customers, by arrangement with OpenAI sales.

Certifications and government use

  • Certifications: OpenAI’s trust portal lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and ISO 42001 (the AI management standard). Scope varies by plan: Business is covered by SOC 2 only, while Enterprise, Edu and the API also fall under the ISO certificates.
  • IRAP: we found no IRAP assessment of OpenAI’s own services on its trust portal or compliance pages. Agencies that need an IRAP-assessed platform have generally used OpenAI models hosted by Microsoft in Azure, which Microsoft had assessed to PROTECTED in 2024. Note that on Azure’s Australia East region, the newest models are offered as “global” or Asia-Pacific “data zone” deployments rather than strictly in-country.
  • ChatGPT Gov is a United States government product. It isn’t an Australian offering.

OpenAI in Australia

  • OpenAI opened a Sydney office in December 2025 and launched “OpenAI for Australia” the same week, including a memorandum of understanding with NEXTDC for a data-centre campus at Eastern Creek. As at this writing that remains a plan, not a place your data is processed.
  • Ads arrived for Australian Free and Go users on 16 April 2026.

Plans you’ll read about that aren’t sold here

American coverage of ChatGPT mentions several products Australians can’t buy. So you don’t go looking:

ProductWhat it isIn Australia?
ChatGPT EduThe Enterprise product for universities, sold by quote.Available through OpenAI sales; Australian data storage applies as for Enterprise.
ChatGPT for TeachersA free workspace for school teachers. No — United States K–12 teachers only.
ChatGPT for CliniciansA free plan for verified clinicians. No — requires a US provider number.
Health in ChatGPTConnects personal health records to ChatGPT.No — United States only.
ChatGPT for HealthcareAn Enterprise-class workspace built around US health-privacy law (HIPAA).Not stated by OpenAI. Ask sales.
ChatGPT GovA version for US government agencies.No.
Nonprofit discountDiscounted Business Standard seats (US$8 annual, US$10 monthly) and up to 75% off Enterprise for verified nonprofits.Offered through OpenAI for Nonprofits; eligibility is verified by a third party.

The API, for developers

Separate from every plan above. The API is how software talks to OpenAI’s models, and it is billed by usage in US dollars, per million “tokens” (word-pieces) sent and received. A ChatGPT subscription does not include API credit.

ModelRoleInput, per 1M tokensOutput, per 1M tokens
GPT-6 AstraMost capableUS$10US$50
GPT-6.1 SolEveryday workhorseUS$2US$10
GPT-6 LunaFast and cheapUS$0.10US$0.50
  • Standard rates for normal-length requests; very long requests cost more. Batch and Flex processing are half price, the “Fast” tier is double.
  • Australian endpoint: approved customers can use an Australian API endpoint that stores data in Australia. It adds 10% for newer models, needs a retention amendment arranged through OpenAI, and still processes requests offshore.
  • Codex (OpenAI’s programming agent) is included in every ChatGPT plan — limited on Free and Go — or can be run pay-as-you-go against an API key.
  • Through Microsoft: the same model families are sold in Microsoft’s Azure cloud, including its Australia East region. Older models can be run strictly in-region there; the newest ones are global or Asia-Pacific deployments.

What changed in 2026

If your mental picture of ChatGPT is a year old, these are the bits that have moved.

WhenWhat happened
JanuaryChatGPT Go launched worldwide, including Australia.
FebruaryGPT-4o and other older models were retired from ChatGPT.
AprilBusiness seats dropped by US$5. A US$100 Pro tier was added. Ads began for Free and Go users in Australia. The Sora video app was discontinued.
MayStorage quotas were introduced on every plan.
July“Agent mode” was replaced by ChatGPT Work. Sites and a new desktop app launched.
AugustBusiness gained Premium seats and a 200-seat ceiling. The Atlas browser was retired.
SeptemberA US$500 Pro tier launched and the US$200 tier reopened with a smaller allowance. OpenAI announced that custom GPTs will be retired in favour of “plugins”. Video generation was removed from the API.

Two things worth knowing if you are reading older advice: no current ChatGPT plan includes video generation, and what used to be called “connectors” are now called apps or plugins.

Which plan, then?

Our view, for Australian small and mid-sized businesses. It is an opinion, not a specification.

  • Just you, now and then: Free is fine. Switch off training in Data controls on day one.
  • Just you, most days: Plus. Go saves A$17 a month but keeps you on the lightest model and may show ads.
  • Two or more people: Business, on Standard seats. On annual billing a seat is A$28 — less than Plus — and you get the things a business actually needs: no training by default, an administrator, single sign-on, and the ability to remove someone’s access the day they leave. A drawer full of personal Plus accounts on staff credit cards is the arrangement to avoid.
  • One or two heavy users in that team: give those people Premium seats rather than moving everyone up.
  • Health, legal, finance, or anyone with a contract that says “data stays in Australia”: read the residency section carefully before choosing. Enterprise stores data here but processes it offshore. If that isn’t enough, the answer may be a different product rather than a bigger plan.
  • Pro: for individuals whose work is the tool — developers running Codex all day, analysts living in deep research. Few office roles need it.

Compare with Claude’s plans and Microsoft Copilot’s plans before deciding — the three are priced differently and the right choice depends on the software your team already lives in.

Common questions

How much does ChatGPT cost in Australia?
As checked on 1 October 2026: Free is A$0, Go is A$13 a month, Plus is A$30 a month and Pro starts from A$155 a month. Business is A$28 per seat per month on annual billing (A$35 month to month) for a Standard seat, and A$140 (A$175) for a Premium seat. Enterprise is by quote.
Does ChatGPT use my conversations to train its models?
On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, it may — unless you switch it off under Settings › Data controls › Improve the model for everyone. On Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API, your data is not used for training by default.
Is ChatGPT data stored in Australia?
Only on some plans, and only for storage. Enterprise, Edu and the API can keep data at rest in Australia. The processing itself isn’t offered in Australia, and the personal plans have no residency choice. OpenAI’s pages disagree on whether Business includes it, so confirm at checkout.
What’s the difference between Plus and Business?
Plus is personal: one person, training on by default, nobody administering it. Business is a shared workspace for two or more people with an admin console, single sign-on, central billing, and no training on your data by default. On annual billing a Business Standard seat (A$28) costs slightly less than Plus (A$30).
Does ChatGPT show ads in Australia?
Yes, on Free and Go. OpenAI began rolling out ads to those plans in Australia on 16 April 2026. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise don’t show ads. Free users can pick an ads-free mode in exchange for lower limits.
Is ChatGPT IRAP assessed?
We found no IRAP assessment listed for OpenAI’s own ChatGPT services. Agencies needing an IRAP-assessed platform have generally used OpenAI models hosted by Microsoft in Azure, assessed to PROTECTED in 2024. Check the current scope of that assessment before relying on it.
