Profile
Web developer, software engineer, and I.T. consultant. I founded Digital Greenhouse in 2011 and have spent the years since working closely with start-ups, small businesses, growing teams, and specialist sole traders. The early days were hand-coding HTML / CSS / PHP / MySQL sites and Joomla / WordPress builds, then full-featured e-commerce sites with custom Stripe payment integrations long before drag-and-drop solved any of it. Today, the consultancy is run as a small team and we use the right modern stack for each job rather than hand-coding from scratch.
I’ve kept up with the technology as it has shifted. An early adopter of ChatGPT and Claude, I now build AI chatbots, AI-powered website integrations, and full-fledged software on AWS using Node.js and the modern JavaScript stack - alongside the day-to-day consultancy work of websites, hosting, and domains.
Across all of it the constants are the same: tight deadlines, sensible budgets, honest scoping, and clients who own everything I build for them. No lock-in.
Core skills
Web development & e-commerce
- Background in hand-coded HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP / MySQL since 2011 - brochure sites, custom builds, and full-featured shopping websites with bespoke Stripe payment integrations. Today most builds use modern platforms and frameworks rather than hand-coding from scratch.
- CMS work across Joomla and WordPress (historically), plus modern static builds with Astro / 11ty for performance-first sites today.
- Comfortable shipping under tight deadlines and small budgets, with start-up clients where every hour counts.
- Performance, accessibility, and SEO foundations: clean markup, schema.org / JSON-LD, sitemaps, Lighthouse 95+ targets where the project allows.
- Clear handover, written guides, and a 1-hour client training session at launch.
Software engineering & AI integration
- Full-fledged software builds on AWS - Node.js back-ends, modern JavaScript front-ends, and AWS services (compute, storage, databases, serverless) for hosting and scale.
- AI chatbots and AI-powered website integrations: OpenAI and Anthropic APIs wired directly into client sites, internal tools, and customer-facing assistants.
- Custom API integrations: Stripe payments, mailing platforms, accounting tools, and bespoke third-party data sources.
- Architecture, security, and cost trade-offs walked through clearly - you understand what you’re paying for and why.
AI training for business teams
- Hands-on workshops and 1:1 coaching on OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), and Microsoft Copilot - from someone who actually builds with these tools, not just talks about them.
- Prompting, document and spreadsheet workflows, Copilot inside Word / Excel / Outlook / Teams, and safe handling of customer data.
- AI assessments: auditing existing tools, identifying 3–5 high-value workflows, and recommending what to adopt (and what to avoid).
- AI usage policy templates tailored to business teams and internal stakeholders.
Hosting, domains & infrastructure
- cPanel hosting administration: provisioning, daily backups, SSL, email, and migrations between hosts.
- AWS infrastructure for client software - right-sized for the workload rather than over-engineered.
- Domain registration, transfers, and DNS management across .com.au, .com, .net.au and others - including taking over the renewal headache from clients.
- CDN, DDoS protection, and edge DNS when it beats leaving everything on the registrar default.
- Mailbox migration, cloud email, and Google Workspace tenancies for teams of any size.
Consulting & client engagement
- Hourly engagement model - no fixed packages, no project minimums, no pretend fixed-price quotes before work begins; time tracked to the minute and billed pro-rata.
- Clear communication when scope shifts or a job looks like it’s heading somewhere expensive - never gotcha invoicing after the fact.
- Documentation, training, and ongoing care plans designed so clients can self-serve where they want to.
- Comfortable working with founder-led start-ups, sole traders, and small-to-growing businesses across Australia.
Experience
Founder & Director
Digital Greenhouse - Sydney, NSW
2011 – Present
Founded Digital Greenhouse in 2011 to do I.T. properly for organisations as they scale - honestly priced and well-built. Now operating as a small team. Across the years the work has covered three overlapping waves: traditional web and CMS development, custom e-commerce, and (more recently) AI integration and cloud software engineering.
Web & e-commerce development
- Designed, built, and maintained Joomla and WordPress sites - including back in the early days when content management on the open web meant rolling your own templates and security baseline.
- Hand-coded fully featured shopping websites with custom Stripe payment integrations, well before drag-and-drop e-commerce or AI-assisted coding existed.
- Hand-coded HTML / CSS / JavaScript / PHP / MySQL websites in the earlier years for Australian start-ups, small businesses, and established sole traders.
- Delivered repeatedly on tight deadlines and small budgets - the kind of constraints that teach you to ship something that actually works, not something that looks great in a deck.
- Sydney Hype (now defunct) - an early Digital Greenhouse Pty Ltd start-up venture. Hired, briefed, and led a 4-person team of writers producing content for a Sydney-focused web property I designed and hand-coded in PHP and MySQL, featuring a bespoke “hype algorithm” with visual “hype charts”.
- First website: Puppeteria.com, built in 2003 - still a client today, with the site going strong over 20 years on.
AI & cloud software (recent)
- Early adopter of ChatGPT and Claude - using them daily in production work since the public APIs first appeared.
- Built AI chatbots and AI-powered website integrations for clients - tying the OpenAI and Anthropic APIs into existing sites and bespoke tools.
- Designed and shipped full-fledged software running on AWS using Node.js and the modern JavaScript ecosystem - back-end services, APIs, and customer-facing front-ends.
- Translates the AI / cloud landscape for non-technical stakeholders - what it’s good at, what it isn’t, what it costs, and what to avoid.
Consultancy services (current)
- Personally leads Digital Greenhouse’s service lines, including web design and development, AI training, hosting, and domain reselling.
- Designed and built the company’s own marketing site (this one) as a mobile-first, accessibility-focused build with structured-data SEO.
- Established a transparent hourly pricing model ($160/hr inc GST standard, $200/hr inc GST RUSH) with time tracked in minutes and billing for the work actually done - no binding hour cap promised up front.
- Direct support: clients deal with a senior point of contact who knows their setup, backed by a small team - never an offshore ticket queue.
Toolstoreperson (casual, one day per fortnight)
TAFE NSW · trade workshop departments
2015 – 2019
A regular one-day-per-fortnight shift running the tool store across multiple trade departments at TAFE - issuing and recovering tools, keeping the workshops stocked, and supporting teachers and apprentices on the floor. Maintained alongside a busy Digital Greenhouse client schedule.
- Fitting & machining - lathe and mill tooling, measuring instruments, consumables for apprentices on the workshop floor.
- Welding - electrodes, gas, PPE, fabrication consumables; safe storage and turnaround between classes.
- Carpentry - hand tools, power tools, and fasteners for the cabinetmaking and construction students.
- Plumbing - fittings, hand tools, and consumables for the plumbing apprentices.
- Stayed close to the trade floor and the teaching staff while keeping the consultancy running - the fortnightly day was a deliberate change of pace from screen-based work.

How I work
- Honest over impressive. If a free tool will do the job, I’ll say so. If a project doesn’t need an agency, I’ll say that too.
- Clear communication. Every update, invoice line, and handover is written so the work is easy to follow and sign off.
- Calm and patient. Tech can be intimidating. I never make a client feel silly for asking.
- Respectful of time and money. Tight scopes, quick replies, fair invoices, and a 30-minute discovery chat to scope the work properly.
- No lock-in. Clients own their code, domain, and documentation. If we host the site, they always have access to what they need to leave, migrate, or move provider.
Leadership & Management Experience
Summary of the team leadership and people-management threads from across this CV - drawn together here because they sit in different sections (paid work, community, and ventures).

- Toastmasters – critical evaluation - delivered structured, constructive evaluations of other members’ speeches as a core role in every meeting; culminated in winning the Area Evaluation Contest (First Place).
Mechanical Engineering
Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade
TAFE NSW · Welding & Machining stream
2012 – 2015
A hands-on trade qualification covering manual machining, welding, fabrication, and reading / producing engineering drawings - completed via TAFE evening classes alongside running Digital Greenhouse full-time during the day. Complements the software work nicely - the same problem-solving discipline, but with steel, sparks, and tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre.
- Welding & fabrication - TIG, MIG, and MMAW (stick) welding; brazing, oxy and plasma cutting; clean weld preparation and fit-up.
- Manual machining - lathe work (turning, knurling, threading), milling, and precision surface grinding to spec.
- 3D CAD modelling - Autodesk Inventor, FreeCAD, and OnShape; parametric models, assemblies, and engineering drawings.
- 70 practice models to spec on Too Tall Toby - regular CAD challenge models built strictly to the published dimensions to keep the technique sharp.
- CAD-to-part workflow - taking a model from design through manufacturing (machining, welding, fabrication) to installed on site.
- Hand tools & precision measurement - micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, surface plates.
Custom Builds & Practical Making
Real-world applications of the workshop skills - one-off brackets, custom holders, improvised cooling, carpentry pieces, and bespoke shipping solutions for delicate equipment. The kind of “I need to make this thing fit this exact situation” problem-solving that bridges design, fabrication, and trade-craft.
- Metal fabrication - custom brackets, mounts, and holders, designed and welded / machined to spec for one-off jobs.
- Carpentry & woodwork - bespoke storage and small joinery built for the workshop.
- Custom packaging - timber crates and shipping boxes (some on castors) for safe transport of fragile and medical equipment.
- Improvised engineering - one-off solutions when nothing off-the-shelf will do the job.
Speaking & Community

Education & Certifications
No University Degree.
Coincidentally, these are the same three words I type before I am immediately unmatched on Tinder.
I study up-to-date documentation, guides, manuals, github, forums (!).
This space is so fast-paced, I am constantly learning new tools and methods, often before formal training courses are made available.
Coursework (historical):
- UNSW CS1: Higher Computing - the full lecture series, taught by Professor Richard Buckland - simply the best in the business, an inspiring and gifted teacher. He pioneered education on YouTube by uploading his university lecture series.
- Computing 1: The Art of Programming (MOOC) - OpenLearning course by Richard Buckland.
- UNSW Online Cyber Security Course
- CodeSchool - Python, CSS, HTML5 and JavaScript.
- Learn Python the Hard Way
- PHP and MySQL Web Development - Luke Welling and Laura Thomson.
