On 16 September 2026, Anthropic announced that Claude chat and Claude Cowork are merging into a single Claude app. You no longer pick “Chat” or “Cowork” before you start. You ask for what you need, and Claude decides whether to answer straight away or take on a longer job — research, a report, a spreadsheet, a presentation — and hand it back as files you can edit. It is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, and your existing chats, tasks and projects carry over.
What changed
Until now, Claude had two front doors. Chat was for conversations and quick answers. Cowork was Anthropic’s agent mode — an “agent” being an AI that carries out a multi-step task on its own, such as reading a folder of files and writing up a report, rather than just replying. You had to decide which door a request belonged behind, and work didn’t move easily between them.
That split is gone. There is one conversation, and Claude chooses the tool. Anthropic’s own summary is that you “don’t need to decide” which one suits your task before you start.
Three things arrived alongside the merger, all in beta on paid plans:
- Claude Docs — “living” documents you write with Claude and share with your team, who can comment on them.
- Claude Slides — presentations you can build, edit and present, and download as PowerPoint or PDF.
- Claude Design — Anthropic’s tool for on-brand visuals and mockups, launched in April, now works inside ordinary conversations. The standalone version keeps working as before.
What stays the same
Anthropic says nothing you have built is lost. These carry over and open as they did before:
- your chats, projects and files
- your Cowork tasks, which now sit in the Recents list alongside your chats
- connectors (the links to Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft 365 and so on), skills and artifacts
- scheduled tasks
- the model picker and the Code tab
By default, Claude still asks before it takes an action. You can switch on a mode where it keeps working and only checks in when something needs a closer look.
When you’ll get it
- Pro and Max: first, on web, desktop and phone, rolling out over several weeks from 16 September.
- Team and Free: next. Anthropic says these “will follow soon” and hasn’t given a date.
- Enterprise: administrators get at least 30 days’ notice before it reaches their organisation, and choose when to turn on Docs, Slides and Design.
The rollout is staged, so two people on the same plan can see the change on different days. There’s nothing to switch on. Once the new experience reaches your account, you can’t go back to the separate Chat and Cowork options.
What it means for a small Australian business
For most people, very little changes day to day. If you mostly used chat, Anthropic’s advice is that you don’t have to do anything different. The useful part is that the bigger jobs — “turn these three spreadsheets into a summary for the board” — no longer live behind a separate mode that half the team never opened.
A few things are worth doing anyway:
- Tell your team. When the Chat/Cowork choice disappears, someone will ask where Cowork went. The answer is that it’s still there, inside the normal conversation.
- Check your AI usage policy. If your policy names Cowork as a separate tool with its own rules, update the wording. The rules themselves — what client data can go in, who reviews the output — still apply. Our guide and free template covers this.
- Keep the “ask before acting” setting on for anything that touches client files or sends email. Let Claude run unattended only on work where a mistake is cheap to fix.
- Watch your usage. Anthropic didn’t announce a price change, but everything counts toward your plan’s limits, and long multi-step jobs use more of the allowance than a quick question. Our Claude plans guide has the Australian prices and limits.
Not to be confused with Copilot Cowork
Microsoft also sells a feature called Copilot Cowork, inside Microsoft 365 Copilot. It’s a different product from a different company, and this news doesn’t affect it. If your business runs on Microsoft 365, our Copilot features guide explains what Copilot Cowork does.
