Can’t read the code? Measure across the face and the thickness with a ruler or, better, a caliper, then match it to the drawings or the full table. The thickness is what tells similar coin cells apart: a CR2032 and a CR2025 differ by under a millimetre.

Sizes are the nominal dimensions from manufacturers’ data sheets; capacities marked ≈ are typical figures, which vary by brand and by how hard the battery is worked.

Lithium coin cells (3 V)

The flat silver discs in car keys, remotes and motherboards. The name is the size: CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. DL (Duracell) and ECR (Energizer) are the same cells with a brand prefix. BR is a different lithium chemistry in the same size and voltage: a little less capacity and current, but better at high temperatures and in long storage, so it is a fine swap in low-drain devices like remotes, keys and clocks.

Every drawing in this section is at the same scale: the face on the left, the edge on the right.

Watch & button cells (1.5 V)

The small button cells come in two chemistries that fit the same holders: alkaline (codes starting LR or AG, 1.5 V, cheaper) and silver oxide (SR, or watch numbers like 377 and 357, 1.55 V). Silver oxide lasts longer and holds a steady voltage until it is nearly flat, so it is the one to buy for watches, calipers and cameras. Alkaline is fine for toys and calculators.

Watch numbers come in pairs: one is made for high-drain watches (with alarms, lights or a digital display, marked W) and one for low-drain analogue watches (SW). Either fits; the right one lasts longer.

Every drawing in this section is at the same scale, larger than the coin-cell section.

Hearing-aid batteries (zinc-air)

Hearing-aid cells are sold by number and by a colour code that every brand uses. They breathe: the sticker covers air holes, and once it comes off the cell starts to run down whether it is in use or not. Peel the tab and wait about a minute before fitting it, so it reaches full voltage.

Three of them are exactly the size of common button cells (312 = LR41, 13 = LR754, 675 = LR44). They are not substitutes in either direction: a zinc-air cell needs air and goes flat in weeks once opened, and a button cell won’t power a hearing aid properly.

Lookalikes: same size, wrong voltage

Rechargeable lithium-ion cells are named by size in the same way as coin cells (14500 is 14 mm across and 50 mm long), and several are exactly the size of a common battery. They run at 3.6–3.7 V, and up to 4.2 V fresh off the charger. In a device built for 1.5 V or 3 V that is enough to damage it. Use them only where the device or its manual names them.

Safety and recycling

Button and coin batteries are dangerous to small children. A swallowed one can lodge in the throat and cause serious internal burns within two hours, often with no obvious symptoms at first. If you think a child has swallowed or inserted one, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 (24 hours, Australia-wide) or go straight to a hospital emergency department; call 000 if they are having trouble breathing or are bleeding. Don’t wait for symptoms, don’t make them vomit, and don’t give food or drink unless the Poisons Information Centre tells you to.

Since June 2022 Australian law has required products that use button and coin batteries to hold them in a compartment a child can’t open, and the batteries themselves to be sold in child-resistant packaging with warnings. Keep spares in that packaging, and put used ones out of reach straight away: a “flat” cell still has enough charge to do harm.

Storing spares

  • Keep batteries in their packaging until you use them. Loose cells in a drawer or pocket can short against keys and coins; a 9 V battery across a paperclip gets hot enough to start a fire.
  • Don’t mix old and new cells, or different brands and chemistries, in the same device. The weakest cell gets driven flat and can leak.
  • Take batteries out of anything you are putting away for months. Leaking alkaline cells are the most common reason old remotes, torches and toys stop working for good.

Recycling

Australia’s national scheme is B-cycle. Drop-off bins are in many supermarkets, hardware and office supply stores and council recycling centres; bcycle.com.au finds the nearest. Put clear tape over the terminals of every battery before you drop it off, and cover button batteries on both sides. Never put batteries in a household bin: crushed in a garbage truck or at a recycling plant, they start fires.

Old computer forgets the date every time it starts?

That’s usually the CR2032 on the motherboard going flat, and it’s a five-minute fix. Batteries in laptops, UPS units, alarm panels and the rest of the office are everyday IT support work for us.

Common questions

Is LR44 the same as AG13, 357 and A76?
Yes — all the same size, 11.6 mm across and 5.4 mm thick. LR44, AG13, A76, L1154 and 157 are alkaline (1.5 V). 357, 303 and SR44 are silver oxide (1.55 V), which last longer and keep a steadier voltage. Any of them fits a device that takes an LR44.
Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?
Only as a stop-gap. Both are 3 V and 20 mm across, but a CR2025 is 0.7 mm thinner, so it may sit loose and lose contact, and it holds about two-thirds of the charge. The other way round, a CR2032 is usually too thick to fit a holder made for a CR2025.
What do the letters and numbers in CR2032 mean?
C is the chemistry (lithium manganese dioxide), R means round, 20 is the diameter in millimetres and 32 the thickness in tenths of a millimetre: 3.2 mm. Other first letters: B another lithium chemistry, L alkaline, S silver oxide, P zinc-air. For button cells the number is usually an IEC size code instead — LR44 does not mean 44 mm.
Is a 357 battery the same as a 377?
No. A 357 is the big 11.6 × 5.4 mm cell (LR44 size). A 377 is the small 6.8 × 2.6 mm watch cell (SR626, AG4). The numbers look alike; the sizes are nothing alike.
Can I use an alkaline LR battery instead of a silver-oxide SR one?
Yes — same size, near enough the same voltage. Silver oxide is the better choice for watches, calipers, cameras and medical devices, because its voltage stays steady until it is nearly empty. Alkaline voltage sags as it is used, which can stop a watch early or make a digital caliper misread.
Can I put rechargeable batteries in anything that takes AA?
NiMH rechargeables (1.2 V) work in nearly everything. A few devices with a low-battery warning tuned for 1.5 V alkaline will call them flat early. Never use a 14500 lithium-ion cell in place of an AA: same size, 3.7 V.
What should I do if a child swallows a button battery?
Treat it as an emergency. Call 000 if the child is having trouble breathing or is bleeding. Otherwise call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, 24 hours a day, or go straight to a hospital emergency department. Don’t make them vomit, and don’t give food or drink unless the Poisons Information Centre tells you to. A swallowed button or coin battery can cause serious burns inside the body within two hours.
Where do I recycle batteries in Australia?
Through B-cycle, the national scheme: drop-off bins are in many supermarkets, hardware and office stores and council sites; bcycle.com.au finds the nearest. Put clear tape over the terminals of every battery first, and cover button batteries on both sides. Never put batteries in a household bin: they start fires in garbage trucks and at recycling plants.
