Why can’t my browser just tell me my IP?
A web page running in your browser can only see your local network address — not the public IP the rest of the internet sees. So this tool asks our Australian server “what address did this request come from?” and shows you the answer. That public IP is assigned by your internet provider and is shared with every website you visit.
IPv4 vs IPv6
An IPv4 address looks like 203.0.113.42. The newer IPv6 format looks like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334 — there simply weren’t enough IPv4 addresses to go around. You may have one or both.
