How loan repayments work

A standard loan is repaid in equal monthly instalments over its term. Early on, most of each payment is interest; over time, more goes to the principal. This calculator uses the standard amortisation formula on the amount, annual rate and term you enter, and shows what you’d repay each month, how much interest you’d pay in total, and the total cost of the loan.

It’s a great way to compare scenarios — see how a lower rate or a shorter term changes the monthly cost and the total interest. Just remember real loans add fees, and rates can change.

Does this include fees?
No — it’s the pure principal-and-interest repayment. Establishment fees, monthly account fees and insurance all add to the real cost, so treat this as a guide.
What about a home loan?
The maths is the same, but home loans often have offset accounts, redraw and rate changes. Use this for a ballpark, then talk to a mortgage broker for the real numbers.
