HEX, RGB and HSL — same colour, three languages

HEX (#0E5C3A) is the compact form you’ll see most in CSS and design tools. RGB (rgb(14, 92, 58)) spells out the red, green and blue channels from 0–255 — handy when you’re mixing or animating. HSL (hsl(153, 53%, 21%)) describes hue, saturation and lightness, which is far more intuitive when you want “the same colour but a bit lighter”: just nudge the lightness. They all describe the exact same pixel — this tool just translates between them.

Which should I use in CSS?
Any of them work. HSL is great for generating consistent shades and tints from one base colour; HEX is the most common shorthand.
Need a full palette, not one colour?
The palette generator builds matching accents and a full scale of tints and shades from one colour. Building a complete, accessible colour system is also part of how we design sites — see web design.
