What is Base64?

Base64 is a way of writing any data — text, an image, a PDF — using only 64 plain characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It’s how binary files get tucked safely inside things that only expect text, like email attachments, JSON payloads, or a CSS data: background image. It is encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide secrets.

URL-safe Base64

The standard + and / characters have special meanings in URLs. URL-safe Base64 swaps them for - and _ and drops the = padding, so the value can travel in a link or filename. Tick “URL-safe” above to use it.

Why did my emoji or accented text break elsewhere?
Many Base64 tools mangle non-English characters. This one encodes via UTF-8 first, so emoji and accented letters round-trip correctly.
Can I turn an image into a data-URI?
Yes — click “Encode a file” and pick an image. You’ll get a data: URI you can paste straight into HTML or CSS.
